About the project
Within the crowded world of nutrition apps, many platforms focus on ease of use or aspirational lifestyles—tracking calories, gamifying routines, or presenting idealized habits. For serious athletes and committed gym-goers, however, these tools often feel insufficient, lacking the depth and rigor required to support their discipline.
Designed for users seeking a more focused approach to their physical goals—whether weight loss, muscle gain, or long-term health—MacroFactor offers a more precise alternative. Created by a team of scientists, coaches, and engineers, the app transforms adaptive algorithms into actionable insights, providing guidance users can rely on. Its core philosophy is straightforward: understanding leads to clarity, and clarity drives results. Yet data alone isn’t enough—numbers need context, and insight requires thoughtful design.
Pentagram developed a new identity for MacroFactor that positions science as both precise and deeply human. The concept of Inspired Science reflects a balance between rigor and empathy, blending analytical strength with motivational support. This idea is expressed through the mission Empower Every Body, which translates evidence into opportunity—making progress, confidence, and knowledge accessible to a wide audience. It also extends into the vision The whole MF World, a playful phrase that conveys both ambition and a sense of community.
“What excites us the most is that our brand can now look as big as we aspire to be,” says the MacroFactor team. “We feel like we can hold our heads high and square up to every big challenge ahead.”
At the heart of the system is MacroSans, a custom variable typeface that captures the brand’s dual nature—structured yet flexible. Its range of weights and widths allows it to function seamlessly across interfaces, editorial formats, and motion, making it a versatile foundation for the identity.
This sense of flexibility continues in the animated ‘M,’ a dynamic element that expands, contracts, and interacts with surrounding content. Acting as a visual translation of the app’s algorithmic intelligence, it introduces movement and rhythm into digital experiences—stretching, spinning, and shifting to bring energy to the interface.
Another key component is the system of icons and illustrations. Food tracking sits at the core of the app, and more than 450 icons were redesigned as precise visual tools rather than decorative elements, helping users interpret data more intuitively. Complementing these are in-app illustrations that mark achievements, ranging from simple acknowledgments to imaginative, playful scenes—such as space exploration or alien encounters—that add personality to user progress. Together, these elements make daily routines clearer while celebrating milestones in an engaging way.
Photography further extends the identity into editorial content. Beyond the app itself, MacroFactor publishes articles aimed at educating and motivating its audience. Food imagery is presented with clarity and restraint, emphasizing freshness and color, while workout photography captures the strength and movement of the human body. This combined approach turns informational content into a visually engaging experience.
“The new brand isn’t just a coat of paint; it’s part of the infrastructure that enables clear storytelling across these different channels,” the MacroFactor team explains.
Ultimately, the identity reflects the balance at the core of MacroFactor: disciplined data paired with the satisfaction of progress. It sets a new standard within the category, demonstrating how design can make scientific precision both accessible and inspiring.
