About the project

Designed as a comprehensive resource, the Climate Tech Map brings together students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and funders interested in advancing climate technology. Functioning as a hybrid of taxonomy, market overview, and strategic guide, the platform organizes a rapidly expanding field while informing and engaging a broad audience. Speed & Scale collaborated with Pentagram to translate this vision, along with that of its coalition of leading climate organizations, into a cohesive digital experience.

Before partnering with Giorgia Lupi’s team, Speed & Scale conducted months of workshops with coalition members including Breakthrough Energy, Elemental Impact, Energy Innovation, McKinsey Sustainability, and the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. This process resulted in a collection of more than 2,000 technologies mapped on a large Miro board, along with a number of unresolved questions. The next step involved refining this material into a structured website, a series of infographics, and a companion poster for launch during New York’s Climate Week.

To address the complexity of the content, Lupi’s team began by examining its structure and aligning it with organizational and audience objectives. Key considerations included identifying gaps in the available data, assessing which innovations could most effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and determining priority areas across sectors. This phase focused on discovery, information architecture, and content strategy, ultimately establishing a clear framework to guide the presentation of the material.

The resulting design system draws inspiration from the space race, astronomical mapping, and the sense of exploration associated with uncharted territory. It combines a structured visual approach with more dynamic and unconventional interactions, balancing clarity with a sense of innovation. Illustrations contribute to this system by depicting elements such as trees, livestock, solar panels, fire, electric vehicles, and industrial infrastructure using simplified geometric forms and controlled color palettes.

A central feature of the platform is the “wheel,” which organizes content into six sectors and twenty-four Opportunity Areas. Each section is represented by icons linked to corresponding Innovation Imperatives and Moonshots. This structure functions as a navigational tool, guiding users through the content. Each of the twenty-five landing pages includes tailored infographics, contextual explanations, video content, and more detailed information about related initiatives. An additional section categorizes 100 types of technologies associated with the energy transition.

The platform is intended to evolve over time, adapting to user input and expanding as new data and features become available.
